ΦΟΜ-ΜΙΑΟ (Φιλοζωικός Όμιλος Μάνης-Mani International Animal Organisation) was formed as an animal protection group in late 2012, following inhumane treatment and cruel abuse of cats and dogs in Stoupa. Miao was established under the umbrella of GAIA, the local volunteer environmental protection, fire and rescue group, to protect the fauna in the region, preserve the natural habitat of wildlife and provide good living conditions for domesticated animals. The status and role of the organization have evolved through time and is now a legal not-for-profit dedicated to animal welfare. Its manpower is a volunteer and its financial obligations are secured through private monetary and in-kind donations.
