Kalamata

Kalamata is the largest city in the region and most visitors' first stop on the way into the Mani Peninsula. Beyond the airport and port, its old town holds a Byzantine castle, the Church of the Holy Apostles, and a pedestrianised centre lined with cafés and shops. The city is also known worldwide for its namesake olives and olive oil, and its long promenade and marina make it worth more than a quick pass-through on the way south.
