If you’ve been near Kalogria Beach this week, you may have noticed a unique and beautiful boat anchored just offshore. That vessel belongs to Project Manaia, an Austrian-based marine research NGO led by Manuel Marinelli. The team is in the Mani Peninsula to collaborate with Dive Code on an important mission to create a no-fishing zone between Stoupa and Agios Nikolaos. This initiative is part of their broader goal in Marine Conservation to protect and restore vital marine ecosystems, a cause they passionately pursue across the Mediterranean.

Marine Conservation in the Mani Peninsula

Who is Project Manaia?

Founded by marine biologist and ecologist Manuel Marinelli, Project Manaia is dedicated to addressing critical marine issues such as plastic pollution, invasive species’ impact, and seagrass meadows’ restoration. With their research vessel, the SY Waya Waya, they travel across the Mediterranean, researching, collaborating with local communities, and fostering marine conservation. Their work is not just about gathering data; it’s about creating actionable solutions to protect our oceans. It was great to see the team assist with Marine Conservation in the Mani Peninsula.

Why the Mani Peninsula?

The team from Project Manaia has been drawn to the Mani Peninsula as part of their mission to assist in establishing Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). This collaboration with Dive Code focuses on creating a no-fishing zone between Stoupa and Agios Nikolaos, a vital step in preserving the local marine biodiversity that has suffered from overfishing. This project is crucial for restoring fish populations and ensuring that the vibrant underwater ecosystem of the Mani Peninsula can thrive for generations to come. Their work plays a vital role in the broader effort of Marine Conservation.

A Broader Mission Across the Mediterranean

Project Manaia’s work in Mani  is just one part of their extensive efforts throughout the Mediterranean. They engage in various projects, from combating marine pollution to restoring endangered habitats. By working closely with other NGOs, research institutions, and local communities, they aim to create a network of protected marine areas that will safeguard the ocean’s health and biodiversity.

The Team Behind the Mission

The Project Manaia team is a dedicated group of professionals passionate about marine conservation. Alongside Manuel Marinelli, Project Coordinator Pınar Marinelli ensures smooth operations on the SY Waya Waya, while Alexia Kalosaka, Project Manager for the Mediterranean Cleanup Mission, leads efforts to tackle marine pollution. Their work in Mani, alongside Dive Code, highlights their commitment to protecting marine life and promoting sustainable practices.

Their visit to our area is not just about research—it’s about making a tangible difference. By supporting the creation of a no-fishing zone and working to protect the local marine environment, Project Manaia is helping to ensure that the natural beauty of  Mani remains unspoiled for future generations. This effort contributes to Marine Conservation in the Mani Peninsula, ensuring that this region’s marine ecosystems thrive for years to come.
